Burnett Dairy Cooperative among 26 Wisconsin companies sending more than 17,000 pounds of cheese to Houston

MADISON – Burnett Dairy Cooperative of Alpha is among several Wisconsin cheesemakers donating more than 17,000 pounds of cheese to Houston to provide food for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. The Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, funded by the Dairy Farm Families of Wisconsin, coordinated a statewide effort with Wisconsin cheesemakers. “We are deeply saddened by the devastation facing Texas residents in the wake of Hurricane Harvey,” says Suzanne Fanning, WMMB VP of Marketing Communications. “Our Wisconsin cheesemakers and dairy farmers are inherently focused on helping others so we offered them a way to get involved. Their response to our call for donations was overwhelming – we were initially hoping to send 200 pounds of cheese, but the donations kept pouring in – totaling over 17,000 pounds!” On Friday, Sept. 1, WMMB employees, cheese company employees and dairy farmers, packed a delivery truck in Madison with more than 17,000 pounds of smoked string cheese, cheese curds, muenster, parmesan, classic cheddar and more. The shipment also included 300 pounds of butter. The delivery is expected to arrive at the Houston Food Bank the week of Sept. 4. The Houston Food Bank is the nation’s largest food bank with distribution to its network of nearly 600 hunger relief charities in 18 southeast Texas counties. Shipping and logistics support is being provided by Independent Procurement Alliance Program, based in Appleton, Wis.

A total of 26 cheese companies from across the dairy state were involved in the relief effort. Participating companies include Agropur, Inc., Arena Cheese Inc., BelGioioso Cheese, Inc., Burnett Dairy Cooperative, Carr Valley Cheese Company Inc., Chula Vista Cheese Company, Decatur Dairy, Inc., Cow Candy, Ellsworth Co-op Creamery, Emmi Roth USA, Foremost Farms USA Cooperative, Grande Cheese, Grassland Dairy Products, Inc., LaClare Family Creamery, Marieke Gouda, Nasonville Dairy, Odyssey Feta, Pine River Pre-Pack Inc., Ponderosa Dairy Products, Sartori Company, Schreiber Foods, Inc., Swiss Valley Farms Co-op, Vern’s Cheese, Inc., Widmer’s Cheese Cellars, Winona Foods, and Zimmerman Cheese.

The purchase will serve to provide a more integrated product portfolio of cheese products and go-to-market sales approach for the overall organization. Burnett Dairy will continue to provide employment to all of the employees of Cady Creek Farms and will maintain existing operations in Green Bay, WI.

“This strategic acquisition will allow our farmer-owned cooperative the ability to better serve our customers and marketplace with innovative products while continuing to provide the same wholesome, quality products our customers and consumers have come to know and trust” said Dan Dowling, President and CEO of Burnett Dairy Cooperative.

Cady Creek Farms was formed and created in 1998 as a partnership between Dale and Wendy Marcott of Cady Cheese Factory and Pete DeMars and John Landmeyer of Dairy Deli Solutions. In 2013, Burnett Dairy Cooperative acquired Cady Cheese Factory and as a result of the acquisition, assumed a 50% ownership interest in Cady Creek Farms LLC.

“We will proudly continue to offer the Cady Creek Farms™ brand of products that are in retail deli today; furthermore, this will serve as a strategic expansion to the Burnett Dairy Cooperative family of brands including Burnett Dairy™ and Wood River Creamery™ found in the retail dairy and specialty cheese cases,” added Dowling.

Burnett Dairy Cooperative, farmer-owned since 1896, is a place where farm families work side-by-side with crop and dairy experts to produce the highest quality milk, from the ground up. A place where a Wisconsin Master Cheesemaker then creates cheese in inventive flavors and crafts new varieties in limited batches. Their brands include: Burnett Dairy and Wood River Creamery in retail, and Fancy Brand in foodservice. Cady Cheese, LLC is a division of Burnett Dairy Cooperative and is a longhorn and deli horn manufacturer located in Wilson, WI.
